This brooch has a story in its creation.

The elder sister is at the top left, the younger sister at the bottom right, connected with the word, “Sisters”.

Two half-sisters, same mother, different fathers, were separated when the elder sister was 5 years old. They didn’t see each other again until they were adolescents.

Ten years later, for reasons not clearly understood, the elder sister broke relations with her mother’s family. Each of the sisters remembered the other with fondness.

More than 30 years later, the elder sister has died without being reunited with her baby sister and mother.

The daughter of the elder sister, niece to the younger sister, looks for her mother’s family, and finds her grandmother.

Two families once again unite, but with much sadness in the loss of the daughter and the big sister.

The piece was made from a composite of two photos of the two sisters, taken from about the same time period. The photos were repaired digitally and made acceptable for photoetching.

The brooch was presented to the younger of the sisters, who wore it to special events, so her big sister could be there too.

When the younger sister died, the brooch was passed to the daughter of the younger sister, her neice.

It is now worn to special events, so both women will be present in spirit.
