“Jade Tufa”
Asymmetry is the most striking feature of this piece. Although it is asymmetrical, it has perfect harmonious balance. It also features traditional tufa castings on each side of the central stone. Tufa casting is done by carving out a form in a soft volcanic rock, called tufa, then direct cast into the stone.
Nephrite jade is the more valued of the two types of jade: nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite jade is much harder than jadeite, and more difficult to get a good polish on it. This jade comes from the area I live in, the Red Desert, or the Great Divide Basin. This area also has other colors of jade, ranging in color from pink to black, opaque but occasionally transparent, and is highly sought for carving, especially in the Far East. This jade was collected and cut by a local fellow, who is known for his attention to detail. To get the best polish on jade, he uses diamond wheels in various grits.
